St. Joseph outscores Portsmouth, 14-10

PORTSMOUTH — Take a walk on the wild side.
In a game that featured nine walks by each team’s pitchers, the St. Joseph Flyers held on for a wild 14-10 in over the Portsmouth Trojans on Tuesday.
“The pitchers struggle with the layoff,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant. “But we battled through it and managed to outscore them.”
The Flyers scored twice in the first with Portsmouth getting a run back in the bottom of the inning.
Jackson Rowe walked to leadoff the game. Matt Sheridan walked and Whaley had an RBI single.
Chase Wilds was safe on catcher’s interference and Ryan Payne hit a sacrifice fly.
St. Joseph (8-1) went up 4-1 in the top of the third with two outs.
Whaley was hit by a pitch, went to third on a hit by Wilds and scored on a wild pitch. Payne reached on an error as Wilds scored.
The Trojans got four runs in the third to go up 5-4 but the Flyers answered with seven runs in the fourth.
Max Weber was hit by a pitch and Izsak Unger and Rowe walked to load the bases. Sheridan was safe on an error for a run, Whaley doubled home two and Wilds’ fielder’s choice scored Sheridan.
Whaley scored on an error and Payne belted an RBI double. Jimmy Mahlmeister singled home Payne to end the uprising.
Portsmouth managed to runs in the bottom of the inning on a double by Danny Lattimore, Bryce Wallace’s triple and Jack Workman’s base hit.
St. Joseph added three insurance runs in the sixth to lead 14-7.
Payne, Jimmy and Michael Mahlmeister drew walks and Weber was hit by a pitch for a run. Unger hit into a force play to score a run and an error on the play scored pinch-runner Ethan Clark.
Whaley went 4.2 innings for the win.
The Flyers play Lewis County on Wednesday at Central Park in Ashland, Ky.
