Payne, Flyers turn back Rebels

Ryan Payne’s first trip to the mound as a starting pitcher turned out to be a nice ride.
Payne worked 4.1 innings to record his first career win as the St. Joseph Flyers beat the South Gallia Rebels 6-4 on Wednesday.
Payne struck out four and did not walk a batter. He gave up five hits and only two of the four runs were earned.
Matt Sheridan pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts and Jimmy Mahlmeister went the final inning striking out two and walking two.
The Flyers (12-5) went in front with three runs in the first inning.
Jackson Rowe singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Isaac Whaley.
An outfield error sent Whaley to second, he stole third and scored on a throwing error.
Jimmy Mahlmeister walked and scored when Michael Mahlmeister was safe on an error.
The Rebels got a run in the top of the second when Caleb Johnson reached on an error, stole second and third and scored when Wyatt Rapp grounded out.
The Flyers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Elijah Rowe walked, Izsak Unger put down a sacrifice and Jackson Rowe singled. Sheridan reached on a missed third strike to load the bases and Whaley hit a sacrifice fly. Payne then singled home a run.
South Gallia scored single runs in each of the next three innings to trailed 5-4.
In the third, Jared Ward singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jaxxin Mabe’s base hit.
A run scored in the fourth On Caleb Cundee’s RBI ground out after Johnson and Unrue were hit by pitches and moved up on a wild pitch.
The Rebels final run in the fifth when Ward singled, went to second on an error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Mabe’s base hit.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the sixth when Jackson Rowe singled and Sheridan sacrifice attempt was misplayed for an error allowing Rowe to score.
Jackson Rowe was 3-4 to lead the Flyers’ offense. Whaley was 1-2 with two RBI.
