A day for book lovers: Consigned Books to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day

This weekend brings the last Saturday in April and book lovers know what that means — it is Independent Bookstore Day, a day for them to hit their favorite local shop and find a good book or three.

In Ironton, Consigned Books will be celebrating the day with a deal for customers.

“All of our hardbacks will be 25 percent off, excluding children’s books,” said owner Cindy Black.

Black said she has seen an increased number of people coming in looking for books because they have found that reading on a tablet just isn’t the same sensation as reading a book.

“A tablet just doesn’t have the same feel as holding the pages in your hands,” Black said. “And people are starting to realize that.”

She said the shelves are filled with 15,000 used books in all genres.

“And we have another 50,000 in storage,” Black added.

The story also carries new books.

“We can order new books for people. We try to give our customers a five percent discount off retail on new books,” Black said.

She said one of the biggest genres that is growing is the Christian literature section.

“We have lots of Bibles, lots of Christian non-fiction books,” Black said.

She said every customer is different.

“Some people like one genre or author. Everybody comes in here with a different purpose,” Black said.

The store also carries a selection of vinyl records, CDs and hundreds of audio books.

“Audio books are great, especially if you are going on vacation or have to travel a lot for work,” Black said. “We also have vintage sheet music, it is very old.”

And Black said people should stop by and meet Miss Lucy, the bookstore’s kitty.

“She really loves people,” she said. “She just brightens everyone’s day when they come in and she walks up to them so she can get petted.”

Consigned Books will have a book launch party from noon-6 p.m. on May 25 for Michael Connick’s book, “HPD,” a crime novel about a Huntington, West Virginia police officer and what he sacrifices in pursuit of a murderer.

Consigned Books is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday. The store is located at 221 S. Third St, Ironton. The store hours Monday-Friday 2:30-6:30 p.m.
