MERCERVILLE — It was too little, too late.
After digging themselves an 8-0 deficit, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers began to battle back only to fall short as they lost 8-5 to the South Gallia Lady Rebels on Wednesday.
South Gallia used a walk, stolen base and a single to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Lady Rebels used two errors and a passed ball to help score three runs in the third inning to make it 4-0.
The Lady Rebels got what proved to be the winning runs when they scored four runs on four hits in the fourth inning.
St. Joseph began its comeback with two runs in the fifth when Kaitlyn Sheridan singled and Kelsey Malone smacked a two-run home run.
The Lady Flyers scored three more runs in the sixth inning.
Emma Whaley walked and Laiken Unger singled to start the rally. Both moved up on a wild pitch and Alex Holtzapfel reached on a missed third strike.
Whaley came home on the catcher’s throw to first base and Holtzapfel stole second on the next pitch. Malone was safe on an error to set up Faith Mahlmeister who spanked a two-run single.
Sheridan and Mahlmeister each went 2-4 for the Lady Flyers. Malone was 1-3 with the home run while both Holtzapfel and Unger were 1-4.
