Late comeback lifts Lady Trojans over Lady Hornets in OVC, 5-3

COAL GROVE — And just when things seemed to be going so well.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets were cruising along with a 3-1 lead when the Portsmouth Lady Trojans used a big sixth inning to post a 5-3 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
Coal Grove took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kaleigh Murphy singled, stole second and scored on Lauren Crum’s base hit.
The lead went to 2-0 in the second.
Macy Malone and Amber Schwartz singled, Katie Deeds hit into a fielder’s choice and Addi Dillow reached on an error as the run scored.
Portsmouth got a run in the third inning when Madison Perry and Jacqueline Bautista singled and Faith Phillips hit into a fielder’s choice.
Coal Grove answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-1.
Jaiden Griffith singled, Rylee Harmon was safe on an error and Emily Carpenter singled.
The Lady Trojans put together the four-run winning rally in the sixth.
With one out, Cassie Potts doubled and Kylee Montgomery and Shaya Kidder singled to load the bases. Kylisha Kearns and Perry followed each followed with two-run singles.
Murphy took the loss as she struck out five and walked two. She also went 2-4 at the plate.
Crum and Schwartz both went 2-4 as Coal Grove had 10 hits.
Montgomery got the win for Portsmouth.
