Michael Mahlmeister has played well behind the plate this season as the St. Joseph Flyers’ catcher.
On Tuesday, he went to the other side of the plate and pitched against the Northwest Mohawks.
He did pretty well there, too.
Mahlmeister pitched five strong innings before going back to catching as the Flyers beat the Mohawks 12-5.
Mahlmeister gave up four hits, an earned run, struck out eight and walked just one to get the win.
“Michael threw a great game. He had good control and did a good job spotting his pitches,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
Izsak “Sweet Feet” Unger and Isaac Whaley led the offense for the Flyers (13-6). Unger was 2-4 with three runs batted in while Whaley was 2-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Rowe walked, went to second on a balk and scored on Matt Sheridan’s base hit.
Northwest tied the game in the top of the second on singles by Levi Tackett and Seals, a walk to Kaden Zumbro and a hit by Billy Crabtree.
But the Flyers got the run back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
With one out, Ryan Payne was hit by a pitch, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Unger’s ground out.
St. Joseph got three runs in the third to lead 5-1.
Sheridan walked, Whaley doubled and Michael Mahlmeister reached on an error as the runners scored.
Courtesy runner Andrew White went to third on a balk and scored when Payne hit a sacrifice fly.
The lead went to 9-1 in the fifth.
Payne walked, Unger singled and Payne scored on an error with Unger going to second. Jackson Rowe then doubled home the runner, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Sheridan singled and scored on Whaley’s triple to cap the rally.
Each team scored three runs in the sixth.
Rivers singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Marcum who moved up on a wild pitch. Emmons singled and Seals singled in a run. Zumbro walked to load the bases and Crabtree grounded out as a run scored.
In the bottom of the inning, Jimmy Mahlmeister and Payne walked and both moved up on Max Weber’s fly out. Unger reached on an error as both runners scored.
Jacob Salisbury walked, Unger took third on a wild pitch and scored on Rowe’s sacrifice fly.
Northwest did manage a run in the seventh when Rivers singled, went to second on defensive indifference and scored on a Marcum’s base hit.
