Downtown to have events this weekend

People of a certain age probably spent some of their youth cruising Ironton on Friday and Saturday nights. In the age before the Internet became readily available and when gas was cheap, teenagers would spend weekend nights just driving around downtown as a way to get out of the house, socialize and maybe meet someone of the opposite sex.
In a sort of memorial to those times, several car club groups will be having the first of its classic cruise lines from 7-11:30 p.m. tonight with events at the Ro-Na theater.
On Saturday, friends of Ironton will have a Kentucky Derby viewing party at the Ro-Na from 5-8 p.m.
After that, comedian Donnie Baker returns to the stage of the Ro-Na.
“He’s on the Bob & Tom Show,” said Rick Jansen, a volunteer with Friends of Ironton.
The character of Donnie Baker is one of several characters created for the show by comedian Ron Sexton. Donnie Baker is a redneck who calls into the Bob & Tom Show from his job to tell tall tales of his friends but usually ends up getting interrupted by his boss, Randy.
“He sold the place out the last time he was here. His shows are very popular and he’s got over a million followers on Facebook,” Jansen said. “His shtick is kind of being a buffoon but he is really a smart guy.”
