WESTWOOD, Ky. — Brycen McCann didn’t run out of gas. He ran out of luck.
McCann pitched well for more than seven innings before fate took over and the Fairview Eagles got a run in the bottom of the eighth to edge the South Point Pointers 4-3 on Tuesday.
“Brycen McCann pitched well tonight and had two hits. Both teams battled for seven innings and Fairview came through with the clutch hit in the bottom of the eighth,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
McCann struck out three, walked three and one of the four runs he allowed was unearned.
The Pointers (10-10) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Drew Smith singled, stole second and third, Brody Blackwell walked and stole second, and Drake McClure singled for a run.
McClure and Blackwell then pulled off a double steal for the second run.
Fairview (14-11) got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Preston Ledford and Jordan Lucas reached on errors and Dylan Wamsley singled.
South Point got the run back in the third to lead 3-1 when Ben Walls singled, McClure walked and McCann singled.
The Eagles got within a run in the fifth as Jack Roy singled, stole second, moved up on a ground out and scored on Jaxon Manning’s hit.
Fairview tied the game in the seventh when Smith walked, went to third on Ledford’s double and scored when Ledford got hung up in a rundown.
The Eagles ended the game in the eighth when George Jervis doubled, took third when Roy beat out a bunt and scored on Ty Hutchinson’s sacrifice fly.
