The 18th annual St. Mary’s Veterans Memorial Day 5K Run will be held on Monday, May 27, 2019 at 8 am. Race headquarters will be at Vertiv (formerly the location of Liebert Corp.), 3040 S. 9th St, Ironton, Ohio.
Registration cost is $20 through May 24 and $25 thereafter.
Race day registration will be from 7-7:45 am, cash only.
The course is mostly fast and flat with one hill. The start is near the intersection of S. 9th St. and Lorain St.
The first half of the course loops through residential south Ironton, returning to and passing the starting point, then turning left toward historic Woodland Cemetery.
The course continues along the cemetery access road and up the hill to the cemetery. After one loop in the cemetery, the course continues down the hill to the finish line in front of Vertiv.
Sport-Tek running shirts are guaranteed to the first 300 registrants. This year’s shirts are dark blue and feature an image of the Woodland Cemetery main gate.
Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each of 28 age groups and also to the top three male and top three female finishers.
This race has become one of the biggest in the area, averaging over 400 finishers for the last eight years.
It is organized by the Lawrence County Veterans Memorial Day Race corporation. Each year this race sponsors two full yearly scholarships to Ohio University Southern Campus. The Frank McCown Veterans scholarships are awarded to a veteran or a dependent of a veteran in Lawrence County only.
Scholarships can be renewed two years if requirements are met. Also, this race has supported several Eagle Scout service projects to Boy Scout troop 106 as well as the Memorial Day Parade cleanup.
Other donations have been to the parade committee and flags for the veterans section in Woodland Cemetery.
Also, a donation paid for windows in the Military room in the Lawrence County Museum.
