PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Brooks Koepka goes for a third straight U.S. Open, matching the feat achieved by Willie Anderson in 1903-05. Here are how the previous attempts fared for players going for a third straight U.S. Open:
1913: John McDermott was five shots behind going into the final round at The Country Club. He shot 79 and tied for eighth.
1931: Bobby Jones did not play. He retired from competitive golf.
1939: Ralph Guldahl was five shots behind at Philadelphia Country Club. He closed with a 72 and tied for seventh, four shots out of a playoff.
1952: Ben Hogan had the 36-hole lead at Northwood Golf Club in Dallas. He shot 74 in the third round to fall two shots behind, and 74 in the final round to finish third, five shots behind Julius Boros.
1990: Curtis Strange shot 68 in the third round at Medinah to get within two shots of the lead. He closed with a 75 and tied for 21st.
NOTE WORTHY: Rory McIlroy arrived at Pebble Beach with an extra wedge in his bag and an extra bounce in his step.
He also brought the putter he used to shoot 61 on Sunday to win the Canadian Open after trading it for a Toronto Raptors jersey, a story all by itself.
