CHESAPEAKE — Todd Knipp felt good as he returned to the sidelines as a head coach. He felt even better when the game was over.
Knipp’s first game as the Chesapeake head coach proved successful as the Panthers rolled past the Oak Hill Oaks 35-13 on Friday.
The main weapons helping to make all the Panthers and their fans feel good were quarterback Donald Richendollar and running backs Will Todd and Kamren Harless.
Todd carried 18 times for a game-high 144 yards, Richendollar ran just eight times for 127 yards and Harless added 73 yards on 21 attempts with three touchdowns including a 25-yard TD reception from Richendollar.
The Panthers racked up 390 yards of total offense with 365 rushing on 51 carries.
Oak Hill was limited to 230 total yards with 182 rushing and 48 passing. Triston Diltz had 96 yards on 15 carries for the Oaks.
The Oaks began the game with a 57-yard, five-play scoring drive capped by Noah Donley’s 11-yard run and it was 6-0.
Chesapeake came on its second possession with a 74-yard scoring march as Richendollar and Harless connected on the 25-yard scoring pass. Randy Wilson’s conversion kick put the Panthers up for good at 7-6.
Wilson used his kicking leg again to help the Panthers only this time it was a booming 63-yard punt that pinned the Oaks back at their 1-yard line.
Oak Hill attempted a pass that Logan Walsh picked off and returned 5 yards for a touchdown and Wilson’s conversion kick made it 14-6.
Chesapeake made it 21-6 with less than 30 seconds in the half as Harless ran 2 yards for a score.
Oak Hill scored to begin the second half on an 84-yard drive that was interrupted briefly by lightning. Diltz went the final 8 yards for the score and Brock Harden’s conversion kick cut the deficit to 21-13.
But the Panthers answered quickly as Richdendollar broke loose on a 46-yard scoring run three plays later and it was 28-13.
Chesapeake iced the win on an 8-yard touchdown run with 5:02 to play.
The only negative for the Panthers was 14 penalties for 110 yards.
