Virginia Davis

Feb. 3, 1925 – Sept. 2, 2019

Virginia Markins Combs Davis, 94, of Lafayette, Louisiana, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 at her residence with her two daughters by her side. The Ironton native was born Feb. 3, 1925, a daughter of the late Rom and Genevieve Payne Markin Sr. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Combs Jr. and second husband, David J. Davis.

Virginia was born and raised in Ironton and moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana with her family on Jan. 1, 1969.

Mrs. Davis was a 1942 graduate of Ironton High School and worked as a secretary for many years and was a homemaker. Virginia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lafayette, Louisiana.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margret Markin

Virginia is survived by her brother, Dr. Rom Markin Jr.; his wife, Mitzi Markin; and their three children. She is also survived by her daughters, Sandra (Elliott) Smith and Sheila (Bob) Fox; a son, Rick (Carolyn) Combs; ten grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery, 824 Lorain St., Ironton, with several family members will be officiating. Visitation will be from 12:45 –1:45 p.m. on Monday.

George Sharp

April 4, 1941 – Sept. 3, 2019

George F. Sharp, 78, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019 at a local nursing home.

Mr. Sharp was born April 4, 1941 in Ironton, a son of the late George P. and Eva (Sammons) Sharp.

Mr. Sharp attended Ironton High School. He retired from Copps Office Supply after 20 years of service, and was a former worker for Mann’s Market. He was of the Nazarene faith and attended First Church of the Nazarene in Ironton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Sharp, James Sharp and John Sharp; and sister, Ruth Ann Lane.

He is survived by sister, Mary Ellen Stapleton of Ironton, brother, Joe Sharp of Ironton; niece, Mary Dillon of Ironton; and several other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m., Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with Pastor Rob Hale officiating. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until time of the service Tuesday.
