Medalists trigger wins for SP golf

PINE GROVE — Having the medalist isn’t a guarantee to win, but it sure helps.
Both the South Point Pointers and Lady Pointes won golf matches on Monday and each had the day’s medalist.
Led by Brayden Sexton who was medalist with a 43, the Pointers took a 11-shot win over three other teams during a quad golf match at the Ironton Country Club.
Ben Wells had a 49 for the Pointers while Brayden Adkins shot a 51, Wyatt Thacker a 53, Draeden Black a 56 and Kaleb Wilson had a round of 60.
The St. Joseph Flyers finished second with a 207 scored led by Jimmy Mahlmeister with a 46 and Ryan Payne had a 49. Jacob Salisbury was next with a 54, Nick Pauley and Connor Waller each shot a 58 and Josh Kline carded a 60.
Brayden Easterling had a 47 to pace the Ironton Fighting Tigers who had a 235-team score. Since Ironton only had three players, an extra 70 shots were added to their team score.
Logan Price had a round of 57 and Noah Woods a 61 for Ironton.
Rock Hill’s team total was just one shot more than Ironton at 236.
Colton Easterling led the Redmen with a 57, Kris Hill shot a 59 and both Victory Day and Isaac Doolin had rounds of 60.
In a girls’ match, the South Point Lady Pointers won a duel with the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers, 190 to 227.
Emilee Carey took medalist honors as she shot a 43 for the Lady Pointers. Abbi Zornes was three shots back, Lucy Gannon had a 50 and Hannah Hall a 51.
Ironton was led by Dela Delawder with a 52, Makayla Collins shot a 53, Trinity Littleton carded a 55 and Maddie Foster finished with a 67.
Rock Hill Redmen Lauren Henry shot a 60.
The Ohio Valley Conference girls’ golf tournament will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the Ironton Country Club.
Ironton’s boys play Coal Grove at Sandy Creek on Thursday.
