PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Trojans used a record-setting performance to improve their record.
Talyn Parker set a new school rushing record as he ran for 112 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a 28-13 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Coal Grove Hornets on Friday.
Parker’s 75-yard touchdown run with 5:20 to play not only sealed the win but enabled him to break his father’s school record for career rushing yardage. He needed 58 yards to surpass the record coming into the game.
JoJo Parker ran for 5,514 yards and Talyn Parker finished with 112 yards to give him 5,626 for his career.
Coal Grove (2-4, 1-2) ran for 281 yards as Austin Stormes carried 24 times for 168 yards and a touchdown while Austin Stapleton had 46 yards on 15 tries.
Hornets’ quarterback Cory Borders had eight attempts for 57yards and a score while hitting 3-of-8 passing for 33 yards.
Parker had all the rushing yardage for Portsmouth (5-1, 2-1) but quarterback Drew Roe was 12-of-17 passing for 211 yards and three touchdowns.
Parker caught a 33-yard TD pass to put the Trojans up 7-0, but Stapleton’s 5-yard scoring run and John Turner’s conversion kick tied the game at the 3:07 mark.
Portsmouth went back on top 14-7 just before the end of the quarter as Roe hit Bryce Wallace with a 25-yard scoring pass.
The Trojans scored on the first play of the third quarter as Roe and Wallace clicked on a 57-yard TD pass.
The Hornets cut the deficit to 21-13 when Borders broke loose and ran 51 yards for a touchdown with 10:08 in the quarter.
Parker’s TD run in the fourth quarter sealed the outcome.
