PEDRO — There was no championship at stake, but the game still had the same feeling.
The South Point Pointers and Rock Hill Redmen locked up in a titanic defensive battle on Wednesday with the Pointers getting a 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference soccer win.
“Intense is the best way I can explain this game,” said South Point coach Zach Jenkins. “Rock Hill came out fired up on their senior night with many kids who have played three or four years and won an OVC championship.
“My boys matched their intensity from the start. I felt Kyle Badgett played his best game of the season tonight at center back. He did a great job handling the Simpson boy for 80 minutes. The other backline players put together a very good effort shutting down the other opponents’ offense.”
The game was scoreless until late in the second half.
South Point got the game’s only goal at the 74-minute mark when Mason Kazee came in from the back line with a header into the net off the corner played in by Josh Helton.
Pointers’ goalie Brody Blackwell had 13 saves while Rock Hill’s Hunter Sparks also had 13 rescues.
South Point finishes the regular season 11-5 and second in the OVC with an 8-2 record.
The Pointers play at St. Joseph at 5 p.m. next Wednesday in the sectional tournament.
South Point 0 1 = 1
Rock Hill 0 0 = 0
