PORTSMOUTH — It took a while to get the offense going, but the defense was there from the start.
The Fairland Lady Dragons used a big second half to blow the game open as they rolled past the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 63-16 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Tomi Hinkle had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals to lead a balanced offense for Fairland (2-2, 2-1). Jenna Stone added 10 points and Kirsten Orsbon had 8 rebounds.
A big key for Fairland was the defense of Emma Marshall who held Portsmouth’s leading scorer Hannah Hughes to one point. Hughes was averaging 20 points coming into the game.
Nia Trinidad scored 11 points including three 3-pointers to pace Portsmouth (2-4, 0-3).
Fairland went on a 9-0 run to start the game and led 11-3 after the first quarter.
A basket by Hinkle put the lead at 20-6 when Trinidad hit a 3-pointer to make it 20-9.
But Libby Judge scored at the 1:41 mark and it was 22-9 at the half.
Trinidad scored to start the second half and it was 22-11, but the Lady Dragons scored 8 straight points to lead 30-11.
Hughes hit a foul shot with 3:46 left in the quarter for her only point and Fairland scored the final 12 points of the quarter to lead 42-12.
Jaiden Rickett scored to start the fourth quarter for Portsmouth and end the run, but the Lady Dragons went on a 19-0 run to lead 61-14 with 43 seconds to play.
On Thursday, Fairland host Gallipolis and Portsmouth goes to Rock Hill.
