PEDRO — When the basketball was up for grabs, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets grabbed it.
Using a strong rebounding effort, the Lady Hornets beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 68-44 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
“The last few games we have been out-rebounded by teams and it has been frustrating,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.
“We made that our focus in the game (Monday). One big part of that was Jaiden Griffith. I was happy with her ability to end up with a lot of rebounds that could have went the other way.”
Coal Grove (4-0, 3-0) was led by Addi Dillow with a game-high 23 points including four 3-point goals. Ellie Holmes had 12 point and was 4-of-4 at the foul line while Caitlin Dillon added 11 points with three 3-pointers.
Rock Hill (1-3, 0-3) was paced by Savannah Cade with 12 points and Lucy Simpson added 9.
Coal Grove converted 19-of-28 from the foul line while Rock Hill only managed to make 4-of-10 free throws.
“We started off pretty good but in the second quarter we missed a lot of shots around the basket. However, we were able to get to the free throw line and extend out lead,” said Roach.
Dillow hit a pair of treys and scored 8 points in the first quarter while Dillon added a 3-pointer and 5 points to give Coal Grove a 17-9 lead. Cade had 4 points for Rock Hill.
The Lady Hornets had 11 points in the second quarter with 9 coming at the foul line. Rileigh Morris had 4 of Rock Hill’s 6 points and it was 28-15 at the half.
Dillow knocked down a pair of triples, Abbey Hicks added a 3-pointer and Griffith got a couple of putbacks as Coal Grove extended its lead to 46-31.
Simpson scored 8 of her points in the quarter and MaKayla Scott added 4 more.
In the fourth quarter, Holmes scored 7 points and Dillow made a pair of trifectas as Coal Grove outscored Rock Hill 22-13 to win going away.
Cade hit two 3-pointers and had 8 of Rock Hill’s points in the quarter.
On Thursday, Coal Grove visits Chesapeake. Rock Hill host Greenup County on Wednesday and Portsmouth on Thursday.
