SOUTH POINT — Once they South Point Pointers started making baskets, they couldn’t stop.
Led by Austin Webb with a career-high 33 points, the Pointers beat the Gallipolis Blue Devils 81-65 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
The Pointers were 31-of-57 from the field for 54.4 percent including 13-of-23 from behind the arc for 56.5 percent.
“We started off a little sluggish,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “Then we had a few shots go through the net and that got us going.”
The Pointers (2-2, 2-1) trailed 15-8 after the first quarter as Isaac Clary and Logan Blouir combined for 11 points for the Blue Devils (1-4, 0-2).
But then the ball started going through the net courtesy of Webb who hit three 3-point goals and scored 19 points in the quarter as South Point surged ahead 35-26.
Chance Gunther and Brody Blackwell each drained three 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Pointers scored 25 points and Webb added another trifecta to make it 60-50.
Blouir hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 points while Damon Cremmens scored 6 and Clary 5 to keep Gallipolis within striking distance.
But Webb took over again as he hit two more triples and scored 11 points while Gunther had 6 and the Pointers pulled away to the win.
“Webb took over the game like he’s capable of doing,” said Wise.
“A big thing is we only had seven turnovers. Our guards did a better job of taking care of the ball. This game is pretty simple. You have to take care of the ball, rebound and make shots.”
Gunther finished with 19 points and 5 assists while Turner had 10 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. Webb also led with 7 rebounds.
Cremeens scored 22 points, Blouir had 18 and Clary 16 to pace the Blue Devils.
The Pointers host Wheelersburg on Saturday.
Gallipolis hosts River Valley in a non-league game on Friday.
