COAL GROVE — Forget global warming. Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ head coach Rick Roach believes in “gymnasium colding.”
The Lady Hornets shot a frigid 24.5 percent as they lost 50-31 to the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes on Monday.
The Lady Hornets (7-2) lost their second straight game as they made only 12 of 49 field goal attempts and failed to make a 3-point goal for the first time this season. They also shot a season low free throws by making 7-of-13.
Addi Dillow had 13 points and Kaleigh Murphy scored 12 points to lead Coal Grove.
Nelsonville-York (8-1) was paced by Mackenzie Hurd with a game-high 18 points. Grace Sinnott added 12 points.
Hurd and Sinnott scored 6 points each as the Lady Buckeyes took a 15-9 lead. Murphy and Dillow combined for all of Coal Grove’s points in the quarter.
Sinnott had 5 points as she and Joscelyn Heller each hit a 3-pointer and the Lady Buckeyes extended their lead to 28-19 at the half.
Dillow scored 6 points to try and keep the Lady Hornets within striking distance.
Nelsonville-York continued to pull away in the third quarter as Hurd scored 7 points and Alivia Speelman scored 5 points — both hit a 3-pointer — and the lead grew to 42-28.
Dillow scored 6 of Coal Grove’s 9 points in the quarter.
The Lady Hornets went stone cold in the fourth quarter with only 3 points — all by Murphy — as the Lady Buckeyes got 4 points from Ashleigh Cantrell.
Coal Grove host Fairview on Friday.
