SOUTH WEBSTER — The South Point Lady Pointers got the lead and didn’t want to give it up.
And except for two times in the game, they didn’t.
Other than a tie and a one-point deficit, the Lady Pointers held the lead as they beat the South Webster Lady Jeeps 50-44 on Friday.
After leading 19-10 after the first quarter, the Lady Pointers biggest lead was 34-22 at halftime.
South Point hit five 3-pointers to build its lead including a trey by Emilee Whitt with five seconds left in the half.
The Lady Jeeps outscored South Point 16-4 in the third quarter and tied the game 38-all on a 3-pointer by Baylee Cox with five seconds on the clock.
Bri Claxon’s 3-pointer at the 7:15 mark gave South Webster its first lead of the game at 41-38, but Whitt hit from behind the arc to tie the game with 6:35 left.
Cox hit a foul shot 23 seconds later for a 42-41 lead, but Whitt’s driving layup gave South Point the lead for good at 43-42 with 5:11 to play.
Emilee Carey’s trey opened up a 46-42 lead and the Lady Jeeps could never get any closer that 4 points the rest of the game.
The Lady Pointers held South Webster to just 2 points over the final 6:13 and that basket came with only 15 seconds to go by Claxon.
South Point’s spread offense forced the Lady Jeeps to foul and the Lady Pointers were 4-of-7 at the line over the final 1:10.
South Point (4-5) was led by Whitt with 18 points with Carey and Khounlavong adding 10 each.
The Lady Jeeps (5-5) were paced by Claxon with 20 points. Faith Malone had 14.
