The Lawrence County Commissioners met on Monday and had their annual organizational meeting for 2020.

Their first order of business was to appoint a president of the board.

Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., who was president in 2018, said he wasn’t going to be it this year.

“I’m going to let somebody else do it this year, I think it’s a good deal to let everybody have their turn,” he said.

“I did have a good time and I appreciate it.”

He made a motion that DeAnna Holliday be president.

“You sure you don’t want to do it again. You do a good job,” Commissioner Colton Copley jokingly asked, before he seconded the motion. They then voted yes to make Holliday president.

Holliday thanked the others and said she knew she had some big shoes to fill following late Commissioner Bill Pratt’s and Commissioner Hayes’ presidency of the board.

“They both served so well during their time and I look forward to leading in a good, positive direction this year,” she said.

She then recommended that Copley be made the board vice president. Hayes seconded the motion and they all voted yes on the motion.

In the third item on the agenda, the commissioner voted to do their work sessions on an “as-needed” basis.

In the fourth item on the agenda, they keep their regular meetings at 10 a.m. Tuesdays. The locations will be announced prior to the meeting. They will also continue to livestream the meetings on Facebook to keep it transparent.

Holliday said they will continue to have meetings at various locations around the county to keep the commissioners accessible to the public as well as have meetings at the courthouse. Their first regular meeting was held on Tuesday at Proctor’s Landing in Proctorville.
