COAL GROVE — It had been seven days since the Coal Grove Lady Hornets. The Chesapeake Lady Panthers just played the night before.
Gotta love resting those legs.
Those rested legs triggered 46 points in the first half en route to a 66-30 rout of the Chesapeake Lady Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“Sometimes it’s good to set back in the recliner and lean back and relax,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“Friday during practice I told the girls I was going to give them some time off to rest up from the sickness we were experiencing. After the first two minutes, they showed me it was a good decision.”
The Lady Hornets hit nine 3-pointers with Addi Dillow making five and Abbey Hicks four from behind the arc. Dillow finished with 32 points and Hicks 14 as Coal Grove improved to 13-4 and inched closer to clinching the OVC at 11-0.
Kaleigh Murphy added 10 points to the winning effort.
The rest was evident from the start as Dillow hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points, Rylee Harmon 4 points and Hicks a 3-pointer to make it 26-6.
The lead ballooned to 46-8 at the half as Hicks hit two more 3-pointers and scored 8 points and Dillow had 6.
In the third quarter, Dillow had three more triples and a foul shot in limited time and Hicks had a trey as the Lady Hornets stretched the lead to 62-15.
“We were without (Caitlin) Dillon but (Ellie) Holmes came in and provided some great defense. We held them to 8 points in the first half,” said Roach.
Coal Grove got more rest as the starters sat out the fourth quarter.
Chesapeake outscored the Lady Hornets in the fourth stanza as Blake Anderson scored 7 of her 14 points.
On Monday, Coal Grove visits Ironton and Chesapeake host Fairland.
