Trojans rally by Redwomen

PORTSMOUTH — Hannah Hughes is trying to become her aunt’s favorite niece.
Hughes scored 21 points including 16 in the second half as she helped rally the Portsmouth Lady Trojans to a 45-35 win over the Rock Hill Redwomen in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
Hughes’ aunt is Lady Trojans’ head coach Amy Hughes and her performance helped Portsmouth improve to 5-9 and 2-9 in the OVC.
Nia Trinidad had a big game with four 3-pointers for 12 points and Jaiden Rickett added 9 pints including a pair of triples for Portsmouth.
Rock Hill (3-13, 0-11) had a balanced attack as Lucy Simpson, MaKenzie Hanshaw and Aleigha Matney scored 8 points each.
MaKayla Scott had 3 points as Rock Hill took a 7-5 first quarter lead. Trinidad hit a 3-pointer for Portsmouth.
The Redwomen extended their lead to 22-18 at the half as Manshaw scored all 8 of her points.
Rickett hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hughes drained a trifecta and got 5 points in the quarter.
Hughes scored 8 points and Trinidad buried two more 3-pointers as Portsmouth rallied to take a 34-30 lead.
Simpson and Matney scored 4 points each to account for all of Rock Hill’s scoring.
Hughes knocked down another trey, hit 3-of-5 free throws and scored 8 points while Trinidad made another 3-pointer and Portsmouth outscored the Redwomen 11-5.
Matney hit a 3-pointer and Savannah Cade had a basket for all of Rock Hill’s scoring in the quarter.
On Monday, Rock Hill host South Point.
