SOUTH POINT — Things just didn’t seem to be going right for the South Point Pointers. But once they got things in order, not much went wrong.
The Pointers shook off a sluggish start and went on to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 62-35 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
“We started a little flat and we couldn’t make a free throw. On top of that, every time we turned them over, we’d turn it right back to them,” said South Point coach Travis Wise.
Chance Gunther scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures for the Pointers (11-7, 8-4).
Nakyan Turner had 12 points, Mason Kazee scored 11 including three 3-pointers and Brody Blackwell added 10 points.
Braden Stamper scored 14 points to lead the Redmen (3-15, 0-12).
The Pointers led just 8-6 after the first quarter but then got the offense going in the second quarter as Gunther scored 8 points, Kazee hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and Blackwell hit a triple to put the Pointers up 27-20 at the half.
Stamper hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points in the second quarter.
South Point extended the lead to 42-29 in the third quarter as Turner scored 6 points and Kazee knocked down a pair of treys.
Owen Hankins had 5 of Rock Hill’s 9 points in the quarter.
The Pointers continued to pull away in the fourth quarter as Blackwell hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points, Gunther had 6 points as they outscored Rock Hill 20-6.
NEXT UP: Rock Hill goes to Symmes Valley on Saturday and hosts St. Joseph on Tuesday. South Point host Symmes Valley on Tuesday.
