McDERMOTT — In 2009, the New York Yankees won the World Series, the L.A. Lakers claimed the NBA title, and the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl.
And in Franklin Furnace, the Green Lady Bobcats won the basketball sectional championship.
There’s a chance the three former events have a chance of being repeated this year, but the Lady Bobcats have already done that event after beating the South Gallia Lady Rebels 56-45 on Saturday to capture the Division 4 sectional title.
Green (17-6) was led by Anna Knapp with a game-high 16 points. Kame Sweeney scored 13 points and Kasey Kimbler scored 12 to aid in the win.
Jessie Rutt scored 14 points and Jaslyn Bowers 11 to pace South Gallia (7-15).
Kimbler hit a pair of triples with Knapp and Sweeney scoring 4 points each as Green took a 16-6 first quarter lead.
Kiley Stapleton scored 4 of the Lady Rebels’ points in the first quarter.
Green extended its lead to 30-16 at the half as Knapp drained a trifecta and scored 6 points and Brelan Baldridge scored all 4 of her points in the second quarter.
Rutt scored 5 points and Bowers hit a 3-pointer in the quarter for South Gallia.
Bowers nailed another 3- pointer and scored 5 points in the third quarter as South Gallia sliced Green’s lead to 39-28.
Sweeney scored 5 points and Kimbler hit another trey to account for 8 of Green’s 9 points in the quarter.
The Lady Rebels got 5 points from Rutt, 4 points from Stapleton and 3-pointers by Howell and Bowers as they tried to mount a comeback.
However, South Gallia had to put Green at the foul line in the quarter as part of a comeback effort, but the Lady Bobcats converted 9-of-15 attempts led by Knapp who was 3-for-4 and scored 5 points in the quarter while Charlie Blevins went 3-for-5.
UP NEXT: Green plays Belpre at 8 p.m. Thursday in the district semifinals at Jackson.
