At 6:20 a.m. on Friday, jail staff found Jacob D. Cochran, 26, of Ironton, unresponsive in his cell.

While some staff began CPR, others called for medical help and a Lawrence County EMS crew arrived at 6:36 a.m.

Cochran was taken to St. Mary’s in Ironton, where he was pronounced dead.

The Lawrence County Coroner’s Office was contacted and the body was sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsy.

Cochran has been at the jail since May 30.

He had been convicted of fifth-degree felony possession of drugs (methamphetamine) and was sentenced to one year of community control and was to complete a treatment program at STAR Justice Community Center. That was revoked on June 4 and, on Wednesday, he was sentenced to six months in a state prison.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death.
