EDITORIAL: Bringing downtown to life for holiday

The Christmas season brings with it a sense of nostalgia — memories of excitedly getting up and rushing to the tree, get togethers with long-passed family members and, for many, shopping trips in a downtown, with store windows warmly decorated for the holiday.

Here, in Ironton, many can be reminded of those memories this month, thanks to the efforts of Jennifer and Brian Sexton.

The Chesapeake couple, who  eagerly collect vintage decorations for both Halloween and Christmas, were recruited by Jennifer’s sister, Patricia Coleman, the owner of Cardinal Wishes, to brighten the empty windows of several downtown storefronts.

The colorful displays, including blow mold characters and aluminum trees, are but a portion of what the Sextons have collected, but have created inviting holiday cheer at several points along South Third Street.

If you’re downtown, they are worth checking out.

We commend the Sextons and Coleman for this unique effort, which will surely be the source of creating new holiday memories for many.
