Dragons edge Pointers to tighten OVC race

PROCTORVILLE — Maybe the Fairland Dragons are thinking about a future career as lumberjacks. They certainly did a good job of creating a logjam.

The Dragons held on to beat the South Point Pointers 61-59 on Friday in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference game.

The win over the Pointers coupled with the Chesapeake Panthers’ win over the Portsmouth Trojans , there are now three teams tied for second place and just one game behind league-leading Ironton.

Fairland, South Point and Portsmouth are all 3-1 in the OVC while Ironton is 4-0. Chesapeake is 2-2 and back in the hunt since all the OVC teams still have at least one more game against each other.

Chase Allen scored 18 points and Brody Buchanan 17 to lead 4 Dragons in double figures. Noah Marcum scored 14 and Keegan Smith added 10 points.

South Point (5-4) was led by Austin Evans with 15 points and Caleb Lovely with 14.

Allen scored 8 points and Marcum hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 more as the Dragons took a 23-19 lead in the first quarter.

Lovely hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 9 points in the quarter for the Pointers. Carter Smith and Elijah Wilburn had 4 points each.

Fairland extended the lead to 39-31 at the half as Buchanan hit a triple and scored 7 points and Keegan Smith also scored 7 points.

Jalyn Anderson scored all 5 of his points and Carter Smith hit another trey for South Point.

The Dragons (6-3) lead was 50-40 at the end of the third quarter as Allen scored 6 points and Marcum hit another trey.

Brayden Hanshaw had 4 points and Lovely drained a trifecta for South Point.

The Pointers rallied in the fourth quarter and got within 50-48 before the Dragons pulled away over the final minute.

Evans scored all 15 of his points in the fourth quarter that included three 3-pointers.

The Dragons were 7-of-10 from the foul line with Buchanan going 4-for-6 as he scored 6 points while Allen was 2-of-2 and Marcum 1-of-2 at the line.
