Purcell Marian routs Laurel for D2 state title

DAYTON — The Purcell Marian Lady Cavaliers won its second straight Division 2 state championship with a 79-52 win over the Shaker Heights Laurel Lady Hawks on Saturday at the University of Dayton UD Arena.

Two-time Ms. Basketball winner Dee Alexander and Ky’Aira Miller scored 18 points each and Samaya Wilkins had 17 points to lead Purcell Marian (29-1).

Alexander is now the state tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 134 points in three appearances. She surpasses Beth Ostendorf (Urbana 1992-93, Pickerington 1994-95) with 122 points.

Mr. Basketball finalist Saniyah Hall scored 21 points and had 14 rebounds for Laurel (19-11). Tristan Williams had 13 points in the loss.

The Lady Cavaliers jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead that included a 12-2 run to end the quarter.

Purcell Marian extended the spread to 38-20 at the half. The lead was 60-35 after three quarters.

In the other state championship games, Fort Loramie beat Waterford 42-29 in Division 4, Africentric topped Ottawa-Glandorf 58-47 in Division 3 and Olmstead Falls edged Springboro 52-45 in Division 1.
