Burlington Living Wax Museum enters eighth year
“This is my favorite day of the year,” South Point Superintendent Sam Gue told Burlington Elementary School’s second graders on Thursday. “I am so proud of you.”
The children were dressed in a variety of costumes, from presidents like John F. Kennedy to scientists like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie to pop culture stars like David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe, for the school’s Living Wax Museum.
This is the eight year for the event, in which the students choose a figure from history or the present, then research their life, write a short paper on them and then tell their classmates what they have learned.
“It’s not about just dressing up,” Rutherford said.
Students taking part in the project were from the classes of Courtney Ray and Stacie Rutherford.
Ray said there were plenty of recurring favorites this year for the popular project, such as Cleopatra and Babe Ruth, while new additions included Bowie, Titanic Capt. Edward Smith, artist Pablo Picasso, soccer player David Beckham and Monroe.
Costumes are either made by students’ families or through donations from past years of the museum.
Students posed throughout the day for walkthroughs from other grades, then a special session of the museum was held in the evening for parents.
