Errors prove costly in Dragons loss to Trojans

PORTSMOUTH — Errors are part of the game, but they shouldn’t be so prominent in the outcome.

The Fairland Dragons were guilty of 6 errors that led to 8 unearned runs in a 14-6 Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Portsmouth Trojans on Wednesday.

Portsmouth (4-2, 2-0) got a run in the first inning on a single by Jacob Roth who scored when Zach Roth singled and there was an error on the play.

The Trojans got 5 runs in the third inning to lead 6-0 as J.T. Williams, Colin Perry and Trevin Brooks all singled, Deandre Berry was on by an error, a balk and another error.

Fairland (1-7, 1-1) finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with 2 runs.

Ethan Wall, Garrett Cornwell and Ben Southard all walked, Luke Brown hit a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch scored a run.

Portsmouth answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning on a walk, 2 hit batsmen, 2 errors and an RBI single by Preston Krebs and the lead was now 10-2.

Brycen Hunt had a leadoff home run in the fifth as the Dragons scored 3 times.

An out later, Alex Morgan singled, Ethan Wall walked and Garrett Cornwell singled, Southard grounded out for a run and Eli Blankenship reached on an error as the final run scored.

The Trojans came back with 2 runs in their half of the inning on RBI singles by J.T. Williams and Zach Roth and the lead was 12-5.

The Dragons got a run in the sixth on singles by Hunt and Kaden Wiseman, a passed ball and a hit by Cornwell.

Portsmouth got 2 runs in the bottom of the inning on a hit by Krebs, an error, a walk and RBI singles by Camron Williams and J.T. Williams.

Hunt had a big game for the Dragons with half their hits by going 4-4 with a home run. Cornwell was 023 with an RBI, Wiseman 1-2 and Morgan 1-4.

Morgan started for the Dragons and was the tough-luck loser as he went 3.2 innings giving up 7 hits, 10 runs with only 2 earned, and he had 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Jacob Roth was 3-3 with a triple, Zach Roth 2-3 with 2 RBI, Krebs 2-3 with an RBI and J.T. Williams 3-5 with an RBI to lead Portsmouth’s 13-hit attack.
