Janet Sue Travis, 77, of Ironton, was called home Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at King’s Daughter Medical Center, with her daughter and son by her side.

Janet was born Nov. 25, 1946, to the late John and Verna (Huff) Steed.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Steed.
Those left to celebrate her life are her children: Nikki (Rob) Sturgill, of Pedro, and Zach (Jessica) Travis, of Ironton, whom she adored.

She is also survived by five beloved grandchildren, Tanner Martin (Skylar Morrison), Taryn Martin, Wyatt Sturgill, Morgan Travis, and Marlee Travis; two brothers: Ron and Rick Steed; a sister: Judi (Roger) Vaughan; and several nieces, nephews, and family that will miss her deeply.

She loved her grandchildren dearly and looked forward to having many more.
Janet was a 1965 graduate of Rock Hill High School and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ohio University and a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Morehead State.

She retired from STAR Community Justice Center as the GED coordinator and director of education, where she was recognized for having one of the most successful GED programs in the state of Ohio. STAR dedicated and named a building after her called, “Travis Educational Center.”

She was also the director of the Southeastern Business Colleges in New Boston and Jackson, and worked at the Vantage Aging Program in Ironton following her retirement, where she assisted with resumes and employment.

Janet loved to help others in any way that she could.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, and loved attending church to celebrate her Baptist faith.

As dedicated as she was to education, nothing meant more to her than her family, especially her beloved, and cherished children and grandchildren.

Janet never knew a stranger and will be missed by so many who had the opportunity to know and love her.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton, with Pastor Jared Hineman officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, 824 Lorain St., Ironton.
