Lady Tigers’ offense floods scoreboard in win over Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Little Hans was the Netherland boy who put his finger in the dike to keep it from bursting. If Hans was trying keeping the dam from bursting on Monday, he must have went home after the third inning.

The Portsmouth Lady Trojans were leading 5-0 after 3 innings only to have the dike break and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers flood the scoreboard with runs in a 15-5 Ohio Valley Conference win.

Portsmouth took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a walk to Emily Cheatham and RBI doubles by Olivia Dickerson and Katie Ankrom.

The Lady Trojans made it 5-0 in the third inning when Dickerson hit a 2-out solo home run, Ankrom walked, Bailey Waughtel tripled her home and then scored on a wild pitch.

Ironton (6-4, 3-1) put a bigger hold in the dike and scored 5 runs in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Katelyn Moore and Braylin Wallace singled and Lyala Townsend hit a sacrifice fly. Emily Weber singled and an error on the play put runners at second and third. Katie Williams hit a sacrifice fly to score courtesy runner Aubrey Shavers and Graycie Brammer capped the rally with an RBI double.

The Lady Fighting Tigers’ offense burst open the floodgates for 10 runs in the fifth inning to create the run rule win.

Wallace led off with a hit, Townsend singled and Williams reached on an error as a run scored. Townsend scored on a passed ball and Brammer followed with an RBI single.

Khamil Martin singled as Williams scored, Aubrey Ferguson walked and Kenley Neal was safe on an error as 2 runs scored. Moore and Townsend walked and Weber singled home Neal. Williams followed with a 2-run single and a throwing error sent the final run home.

Ironton had 15 hits with Brammer going 3-5 with a double and an RBI, Weber 2-4 with an RBI, Martin 3-3 with an RBI, Townsend 2-2 and an RBI, Wallace 2-4, Williams 1-3 with 5 RBI, Neal 1-4 with 4 RBI, and Moore 1-3.

Wallace got the win as she went 5 innings giving up 6 hits, 5 earned runs with 10 strikeouts and 1 walks.

Dickerson was 3-3 with a double, home run and 2 RBI, Ankrom 1-2 with a double an RBI, Waughtel 1-3 with a triple and RBI, and Cheatham 1-2 for Portsmouth.
