Strong pitching helps Ironton sweep DH

CHESAPEAKE — The Ironton Fighting Tigers were stingy.

Chaydan Kerns and Connor Kleinman teamed up to pitch a one-hitter while Braydon Baker and Tanner Kleinman combined on a 3-hitter as the Fighting Tigers swept the Chesapeake Panthers 17-0 and 17-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

In the first game, Kerns got the win with 3 innings of work as he gave up one hit, struck 7 and did not walk a batter. Connor Kleinman struck out 4 without giving up a hit or walk in 2 innings.

Kerns helped his own cause by going 2-2 with 2 runs batted in.

Ironton had 12 hits as Ian Ginger was 2-5 with 2 RBI, Jon Wylie 1-2 with an RBI, Tyler Roach 2-2 with an RBI, Brady Moatz 2-2 with 4 RBI, Jayson Maddy 1-2, and Tanner Kleinman 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI.

Braxton Oldaker was 1-2 for the Panthers’ only hit.

Ironton took a 6-0 in the top of the first inning.

With one out, Baker walked, Wylie singled and Moatz was hit by a pitch. A run scored on a passed ball and then Kerns singled for a 2-0 lead.

Connor Kleinman was safe on an error, Moatz scored on a passed ball and Tanner Kleinman doubled home 2 runs.

Dawson Philyaw walked and a passed ball scored the final run.

Ironton got a run in the second when Baker walked, Wylie was safe on an error and Moatz had an RBI single.

The lead went to 11-0 in the third.

Philyaw walked, Baker and Wylie were each hit by a pitch and Moatz doubled to lead the bases. Kerns singled home Moatz to cap the rally.

Ironton got a run in the fourth when Tanner Kleinman singled, moved up on a ground out and scored on a hit by Ginger.

The Fighting Tigers put the game away with 5 runs in the fifth.

Roach and Maddy singled, Connor Kleinman walked, Tanner Kleinman was safe on an error for a run, Philyaw walked to force in a run, Ginger singled in a run, Baker walked and Roach singled home the final run.

In the second game, Ironton took a 7-0 lead in the first inning.

Ginger and Wylie doubled for a run and Moatz followed with an RBI single. Kerns singled in Moatz and Connor Kleinman singled in another run.

Tanner Kleinman walked and Jayson Maddy singled for a run. Roach grounded out as a run scored.

The Fighting Tigers got 5 more runs in the bottom of the second to make it 12-0.

Wylie reached on an error, Kerns singled, Connor Kleinman walked and Tanner Kleinman was safe. Maddy walked to force home a run and Roach singled for a run and an error on the play scored another run.

Ironton got a run in the third as Nick Sites, Philyaw and Nate Sloan all walked and Ethan Sutton beat out an infield hit.

Chesapeake got its run in the fourth inning when Oldaker singled, Jonathan Brammer hit into a force play and moved to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Andrew Daniels.

Ironton finished off its scoring with 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Roach doubled and scored on a hit by Tommy Sheridan. Baker and Sites walked and then Philyaw got an RBI single. Sutton grounded out as 2 more runs scored.

Ironton had 12 hits as Kerns was 2-2 with an RBI. Roach 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI, Sutton 1-2 with 3 RBI, Maddy 1-2 with 2 RBI, Wylie 1-2 with a double an an RBI, Moatz 1-2 with 2 RBI, Sheridan, Kleinman and Philyaw all 1-1 with an RBI, and Gingers 1-3 with a double.

Baker went 3 innings for the win he gave up one hit, struck out 7 and did not walk a batter. Tanner Kleinman finished and gave up 2 hits, an earned run with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.
