Dragons slip past Pointers for key OVC win, 3-1

Two of the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference met on Monday with the Fairland Dragons edging the South Point Pointers 3-1.

Fairland’s Ethan Wall won a pitcher’s duel with South Point’s Brayden Hanshaw.

Wall pitched a complete game giving up 5 hits, one earned run while striking out 5 and walking one.

Hanshaw allowed 7 hits, one earned run with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks in 6 innings.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Fairland went up 1-0.

With one out, Carson Sansom walked, moved up on a ground out and scored when Keegan Smith reached on an error.

Fairland got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth.

Alex Morgan singled, moved to third on a wild pitch and passed ball and scored on a hit by Blaze Perry.

The Dragons (3-8, 2-1) added an insurance run in the sixth.

Luke Brown was safe on an error, Smith hit into a force out, Brycen Hunt singled and Morgan delivered a 2-out RBI single.

Morgan went 3-for-4 with the RBI as Fairland had 7 hits. Hunt was 2-4, Perry 1-3 with an RBI and Brown 1-3.

Hanshaw hit a solo home run leading off the seventh inning to ruin Wall’s shutout bid.

Ethan Layne, Kolton Layman, Xavier Haney and Hanshaw all went 1-3 while Gage Chapman was 1-2 for the Pointers (7-4, 3-1).
