John Akers

John Michael “Mickey” Akers, 80 of Elkton, Florida, died peacefully in hospice care on Thursday, April 4, 2024 in Saint Augustine, Florida.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1943 to Norford and Dororthy Akers in Ironton.

He was preceded in death by son John Frederick, his parents, brother James and his beloved wife, Janice.

He was employed by CSX Transportation for 42 years and retired in 2004.

He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Akers Whaley and Lisa (Dwane) Johnson; one son, Michael (Rachelle) Akers; and eight grandchildren, Ivy, Braeden and Will Whaley, Alyson, Jared and Zachary Johnson, Samantha and Nathaniel Akers.

Visitation will be 9–10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, located at 905 S. Fifth St., Ironton, followed by the rosary and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.

The burial will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Ironton.

Mickey Akers will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, friend, and man of faith.

His stories, wisdom and the warmth of his company will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
