Errors plague Flyers in loss to Eagles

COAL GROVE — A team never likes to add fuel to the fire. But 6 errors added to the fire for the St. Joseph Flyers.

The miscues led to 4 unearned runs and kept innings alive as the Flyers lost 10-1 to the Eastern Meigs Eagles on Saturday.

Eastern (8-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ethan Edwards led off with a single, Ayden Wilhelm was hit by a pitch an out later, the duo pulled off a double steal and Edwards scored when Caleb Abner grounded out.

St. Joseph (6-2) tied the game in the second inning.

Carson Lyons led off the inning with a double, stole third base and scored a ground out by Brady “Quinn” Medinger.

The score remained tied until the fifth inning when Eastern scored 3 runs.

Lane Atha was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Peyton Buckley and Ethan Edwards singled to load the bases.

Alex Collins singled home 2 runs and Wilhelm hit a sacrifice fly.

The Flyers were guilty of 3 errors in the sixth inning as the Eagles got 5 runs to lead 9-1.

Lance Hensler got a one-out double, Atha reached on an error and Hensler scored on a wild pitch. Buckley singled and an error on the play scored Atha. Buckley stole third and scored on an error.

Edwards hit a pop fly single and Collins was safe on an error to put runners at second and third. Abner was safe on an error as the runners scored.

The Eagles final run scored in the seventh on a single by Brady Rockhold, a ground out and a double by Atha.

The Flyers had just 4 hits with Lyons 1-2 with a double, Medinger 1-3 with an RBI, Darryn “Hitman” Harvey 1-2 and Drew Brown 1-3.

Evan Balestra started and took the loss. He worked 4 innings, gave up 4 hits, 4 earned runs and walked 2 batters. Medinger went 1.1 innings giving up 3 hits and 4 runs but only one earned. Eli Whaley finished the final 1.2 innings, gave up 2 hits, 2 runs with one earned run.

Buckley went the distance for the win. He struck out 9, walked 3 and the run was earned.

The Eagles had 9 hits with Edwards 3-5 and Buckley 2-3 with an RBI.
