Ironton offense backs Kerns in win over Blue Devils

As The Beatles once sang, “I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends,” so was Chaydan Kerns humming on Monday.

The Ironton senior pitcher pitched 6 strong innings and his teammate backed him with 9 hits and an 8-2 win over the Gallipolis Blue Devils in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Kerns gave up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, struck out 8 and walked 3. He gave up both runs and 3 hits in the first inning before settling down and shutting the Blue Devils out on just 3 hits the rest of the way.

Braydon Baker pitched a perfect inning to close out the win.

Jon Wylie was 2-4 with a run batted in, Tyler Roach was also 2-4 while Ian “Snap” Ginger, Brady Moatz and Connor Kleinman were all 1-3. Kerns helped himself by going 2-4 with an RBI.

Gallipolis (10-7, 6-6) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.,

Cole Hines singled, Conner Roe doubled him to third, Tylar Young singled for a run and Matthew Foster hit a sacrifice fly.

Ironton (12-7, 8-4) answered with 2 runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.

Ginger walked, Moatz walked, they each stole a base and Ginger scored on a wild pitch. Moatz scored on a passed ball.

Ironton grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning.

Baker and Dawson Philyaw both walked to start the inning. Roach then hit a line drive for a base hit to score Baker.

The Fighting Tigers made it 4-2 in the third inning.

Kerns had a leadoff single and Connor Kleinman followed with a base hit. Tanner Kleinman put down a sacrifice bunt and Baker grounded out as Kerns scored.

Ironton got 2 more runs in the fourth inning to lead 6-2.

With one out, Moatz singled and went to third on a hit by Wylie. An outfield error allowed Wylie to reach second base.

Kerns grounded out as Moatz scored and Wylie came home on an error.

Ironton added 2 more insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Roach led off with a base hit, stole second and scored on a hit by Ginger who went to second on the throw home.

An out later, Wylie singled to drive home Ginger.
