Long advances to round 2 of 200M Olympic Trials

After failing to qualify for the United States Olympic track and field team in the 100-meter dash, Ironton native McKenzie Long turned to her best race for better results.

A total of four heats were ran on Thursday night with the top five finishers in each heat advancing to the next round along with the the next 7 fasters times.

The second round will be on Friday at 10:06 p.m. with the top 2 in each heat and the next 3 fastest times in each heat advancing to the finals.

Long — the NCAA champion this past season in the 200 meters — ran a time of 22.49 seconds in the race to finish fourth in the first round of 200-meter dash trials.

Sha’Carri Richardson — who won the 100-meter dash last Saturday – had the best overall time of 21.99 with Gabby Thomas second at 22.11 seconds.

Abby Steiner and Brittany Brown tied for third with a time of 22.29.

After Long in fifth place was Jadyn Mays at 22.50, Anavia Battle 22.57, Jenna Prandini 22.58, Tamari Dvis 22.66, Twanisha Terry 22.71, Tamara Clark 22.82, Jassani Carter 22.85, Candace Hill 22.88, Jayla Jamison 22.89, Madison Whyte 22.93, Tiraih Kelley 22.97, Rosey Effiong 22.98, Kennedy Blackmon 23.00, Elise Cooper 23.05, Caisja Chandler 23.08, Cambrea Sturgis 23.12, Jada Bayfark 23.20, Kenondra Davis 23.21, Adriana Tatum 23.25, Lynna Irby-Jackson 23.28, Camryn Dickson 23.37 and Halle Bieber 23.71.

Long was a 3-event NCAA champion as she won the 100-meter dash, the 200 meters and was on the winning 4×100 relay team.

Long ran a 10.82 seconds to win the 100, 21.83 to win the 200 meters and 4×100 really posted 42.34 seconds clocking.

Her time in the 200 meters is the second fastest time in women’s college history and the 24th fastest time in world track and field history.

The relay team of Akilah Lewis, Gabrielle Matthews, Jahniya Bowers and Long  combined for the 18th fastest time in women’s college history.
