Don’t stub your toe.

The Coal Grove Hornets lead the Ohio Valley Conference race. The South Point Pointers and Fairland Dragons each have one loss. All three have key games next week including Coal Grove at Fairland.

But in order to set up those games, none of the afore mentioned teams can afford a letdown this week.

River Valley (2-6, 0-3) at

Coal Grove (5-3, 3-0)

A quick glance at the records would lead fans to think the Hornets will win in a cakewalk. Maybe they will, but remember last season’s final game at River Valley when the Hornets made a two-point conversion in the second overtime to beat the Raiders 32-31.

River Valley has been able to score points with its passing game. Quarterback Clayton Curnutte has been putting up impressive numbers. He was 15-of-35 for 365 yards and four touchdowns in a 69-34 loss to Fairland and 13-of-25 for 210 yards last week in a 28-14 loss to Chesapeake.

But the Hornets ground game made be too strong for the Raiders’ defense. Coal Grove has fullbacks Frank Delawder and Bubba Wood and running backs Chris Brammer and Oakie Haynes to share the load.

Rock Hill (0-8, 0-3) at

South Point (4-4, 2-1)

The same can be said for the Pointers. Don’t look at the Rock Hill record.

If the young and inexperienced offensive line of the Redmen can give freshman quarterback Will McCollister time, he has an excellent receiver in Mitchell Davenport plus complimentary receivers C.J. Justice and Jake Brown.

Running back Corey Bamer has been more productive the second half of the season. A healthy Josh Malone back in the lineup would help dramataically.

Symmes Valley (4-4, 1-2) at

Ports. Notre Dame (5-3, 1-1)

This will be the only game in town as the Vikings travel for a Saturday night Southern Ohio Conference game against the Titans.

The banged-up Vikings need a win to guarantee at least a third place finish in the conference race. Notre Dame needs a win over the Vikings and an upset next week against Sciotoville East to gain a share of the league title.

Because of injuries, the Vikings have inserted Cody Myers at quarterback, moved quarterback Kyle Bowen to fullback and sent Cody Bland back to the offensive line from the fullback spot.

Notre Dame relies on the running of Thad Bowman who earlier this season ran for 289 yards and scored four touchdowns in a win over Marion Catholic.

The Titans’ passing game is led by quarterback Brock Hannah and receiver Alex Glockner.
