Logan too much for Fighting Tigers

Ironton did one out of three things right on a night they needed all three.

Going into Friday’s key Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game against the Logan Chieftains, Ironton coach Bob Lutz knew turnovers could be a factor. He also knew that two other areas would be factors.

Ironton didn’t do the two things that were critical and the result was a 35-10 loss.

“We took care of the ball, but we didn’t do those other two things,” said Lutz. “We didn’t block and we didn’t tackle. We didn’t handle adversity well.”

Ironton (3-2, 1-1) had 258 total yards including 187 passing as Johnathon Schweickart completed 9-of-17. Lukas Morris had five receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Chance Freeman ran for 52 yards and Tony Murphy had 50 more. However, Ironton lost 41 yards on quarterback sacks.

Logan (5-0, 1-0) relied on the hot-hand of quarterback Patrick Angle who was 16-of-18 for 262 yards and three touchdowns. He finished 20-of-25 for 302 yards and four scores.

Angle completed five passes on the opening drive including an 8-yard TD to Jordan Rutter to take a 7-0 lead.

Ironton came right back with a 13-play drive that ended on a 31-yard field goal by Schweickart.

Logan appeared bottled up on its next possession, but a 45-yard scoring pass to Rutter extended the lead to 14-3.

The lead went to 21-3 on a 16-yard screen pass to Mason Mays with 5:25 left in the half.

But the Chieftains weren’t finished. With time running out, Angle scrambled and let fly with a long pass that was caught at the 2-yard line by Jon Neff. Two plays later Clay Morgan scored on a 1-yard run and it was 28-3 at the half.

“We blew two coverages and left their guy running wide open. It was the same things we worked on in practice all week,” said Lutz.

Ironton came out the second half with a determined attitude to get back in the game. But another drive stalled.

“We didn’t have trouble moving the ball, but every time we got close something would happen,” said Lutz. “We came out the second half and went right down the field and then Murphy slipped in the backfield and that put us in second and long.”

Three straight passes went incomplete although the fourth down pass appeared to be a touchdown as Morris got both feet down in the end zone only to be ruled out of bounds.

Morris came up with an interception at the Logan 47, but a 12-yard sack pushed Ironton back and eventually forced a punt.

A 74-yard catch-and-run pass to Morris produced a touchdown with 8:29 left as Ironton got within 28-10.

But Logan came right back with a 55-yard, six-play drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Mason Mays with 5:55 left.

The Fighting Tigers went back into Logan territory at the 47, but an intentional grounding penalty stymied the drive and any more scoring hopes.
