Possessive Hornets top Newport 29-14

Time was on Coal Grove’s side Friday Night.

Time of possession, that is.

The Hornets’ offense held the ball for well over 30 minutes, using their famous ball-control style of offense and making plays on defense when they needed to as Coal Grove defeated Newport, Ky, 29-14.

Frank Delawder was the workhorse for the Hornets’ long, time-consuming drives, carrying the ball 37 times for 147 yards and one touchdown.

“I thought our kids played well on both sides of the ball,” said Coal Grove Head Coach Dave Lucas. “They (Newport) had some great skill kids, but we played good defense.”

Despite the Hornets’ grinding style play throughout most of the game, they wasted almost no time getting on the board. Oakie Haynes took the opening kickoff and raced 85 yards to the end zone. Scott Irwin kicked the extra point and Coal Grove (2-3) was up, 7-0.

But Newport (1-3) responded with a long kickoff return of its own, returning the ball to the Coal Grove 38.

The ensuing eight-play drive ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cody Collins to Willie Price with 7:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Coal Grove then began the first of its mammoth drives from its own 20. The Hornets went 80 yards in 20 plays, the last of which was a 5-yard touchdown run from Chris Brammer with 9:55 to go in the half, making it 13-7 after the missed extra-point attempt.

But Newport answered again with a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive on which Newport running back Marsean Oden scampered into the end zone from seven yards out with 7:08 left in the second quarter.

On the next Newport possession, Collins mishandled a low snap and Robert Barnette recovered the ball for Coal Grove at the Newport 10-yard line.

Haynes got the second of his two touchdowns on a fourth and goal from the 3-yard line, taking a reverse left and sneaking into the end zone with 1:17 left in the half.

Wayne Sparks found Chris Brammer for the two-point conversion and it was 21-14.

With 9:50 left in the third quarter, Coal Grove took over at their own 20 and eventually finished off another 80-yard, 20-play drive with one-yard touchdown run from Delawder. Brammer ran for another two-point conversion, making it 29-14.

The Hornets ended the game with a seven-minute, eight-second drive which went 44 yards in 10 plays and ended on the Newport 10 as time expired.
