With the rapid growth of the popular game cornhole, the city of Ironton has decided to put on an event this fall.

Mayor Rich Blankenship has announced the city will sponsor a tournament Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2-6 p.m. at Etna Street Park.

“This is an event through Parks and Recreation that we thought citizens would enjoy,” Mayor Rich Blankenship said. “We realized there was a lot going on Saturdays, so we thought Sunday afternoon would be a good time.”

The entry fee is $20 per two-person team. Blankenship said food and prizes will also be available.

A cornhole tournament is also expected to be part of the Ironton Oktoberfest, which is organized by the Friends of Ironton and scheduled for Oct. 11-12.

Friends of Ironton President Rick Jansen said the event will feature live bands, German food and a lively environment for the Ohio-State-Purdue football game.

“We’re calling it ‘Ironton’s Largest Tailgate Party,’” said Jansen, who said details of the event are still being finalized.

The event is scheduled from noon-11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 and from noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12.
