The mansion that is home to the Lawrence County Historical Society was the site of an old-fashioned ice cream social Saturday evening.

Tables were laden with heavily-iced chocolate and pink cakes and peach and cherry pies as members of the historical society dished up ice creams and toppings.

It was all a part of having monthly events that will show off the efforts of the museum volunteers who work to preserve the history of the county.

“We had an ice cream social about five years ago and thought we would try it again,” Peggy Karshner, society president, said. “If this turns out well, we’ll do it again.”

Society vice president Bob Price, who spent most of the evening asking visitors their choice of ice cream, sees these kinds of events as ways to introduce the museum to those unfamiliar with what it has to offer.

“It brings people into the museum,” he said, “and lets people understand what we have available.”

Next month will be “Meet the Cemetery Walk Characters” where visitors can meet and talk with some of the historical figures who will inhabit Woodland Cemetery for the historical society’s popular Cemetery Walk.

The August event will be at the museum from 1 to 4 p.m.

Then on Sept. 27 starting at 6 p.m., there will be the Cemetery Walk where famous Irontonians now buried in Woodland Cemetery come back to talk about their lives on earth. Expected are between 30 to 40 characters portrayed by area residents.

In November, there will be an afternoon of learning how to make easy Christmas decorations. That starts at 1 p.m. Then comes the Candlelight Church Walk on Dec. 6 starting at 5 p.m.

“They do wonderful work here with a limited budget and a whole lot of hard work,” Mark McCown, one of the visitors to the social, said. “It brings folks out from the community.”
