One good look deserved a closer look.

University of Kentucky coach James Thomas saw Ironton’s Lukas Morris in early June at the Ohio Division II state track meet.

Morris tied his school record with a jump of 6-8 to finish second in the state.

Thomas got a closer look when Morris participated in the UK track camp July 13-16 and gave an even better performance.

Competing in the camp meet held on the final day, Morris cleared 6-11 to win the high jump event. He also won the 200-meter dash at 23.4 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 20-10.5.

“I high jumped first, so my legs were a little tired,” said Morris. “I did three events during the regular season, so it didn’t bother me. I was a little out of shape.”

Ironton track coach Greg Cronacher told Morris the Kentucky coach was impressed with his effort at the state meet, prompting Morris to attend the UK camp.

“Coach Cronacher said he saw me at the state meet and that he was interested in me,” said Morris.

Morris was also a wide receiver for the Fighting Tigers football team and forward on the basketball team.
