PROCTORVILLE — A Coal Grove teen suffered a slight cut on his foot Saturday night as he was on an amusement park ride at the Lawrence County Fair.

Trey Malone, 13, was riding the Scrambler when the foot rest dropped down scrapping the ground.

“Maybe a bolt had jarred lose. It dropped down,” Randy Lambert, a director on the fair board, said. “When it dropped down, it drug the ground and hit on a little metal plate.”

The fallen plate made a lot of noise and the operator immediately turned the ride off, Lambert said.

However, the foot rest flipped back up and “kind of pinned his foot,” Lambert said.

The result was a one-to two-inch cut on the youth’s foot that was treated with Neosporin and a bandaid by EMTs. There was also a small bruise.

“He was fine. He was walking around. His parents agreed he did not need to be taken to the emergency room,” Lambert said.

It is the first time there has ever been a mechanical problem with a ride in his tenure on the fair board, Lambert said.

All rides are checked out before the fair by an inspector with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Then they are checked twice again during fair week, the fair official said.

After the incident with the Scrambler happened, the ride was shut down and will not be operated again at any other fair until it is inspected by the state.

The ride was operated by JCJ Amusements, which is based in Gibsonton, Fla. Calls were not returned by press time.
