“We got clutch hits. Except for the triple by Conley, all our runs came with two outs. And Howie’s was the big hit. It was a no-doubter,” said Ironton coach Chuck Price.

Each team scored twice in the second inning.

With one out, Jared Eldridge was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Pinch-runner Pierce Reeves went to third on Jonathan Williams hit. Williams stole second and both runners scored on passed balls.

Rock Hill’s second began with a walk to Russell. Jay Howard singled and Alex Bare had a two-run triple.

Tanner Riley walked and Conley slugged a triple to put Ironton up 3-2 in the third inning.

The lead went to 5-2 in the fifth inning when T.J. Young had a two-out single and Lucas unloaded a two-run homer.

Rock Hill got a run in the sixth on a hit by Mitchell Davenport, a stolen base, and a one-out single by Russell.

Tommy Waginger had the defensive play of the game with an over-the-shoulder catch running away from the infield.

“We made some nice plays on defense. Tommy’s looked like Willie Mays,” said Price.

Wayne Sparks went 6.1 innings for the win. He struck out nine and walked two. Riley finished up for the save.

“Wayne wasn’t as sharp as normal, but he battled his way through. He still pitched well,” said Price.

Ironton will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the South Point-Rock Hill winner.
