What do a grocery store shopping cart, a seat from a teeter-totter and an automobile tire all have in common?

They were removed from the Ironton riverfront Saturday by volunteers during the annual River Sweep.

The one-day event brought out a few dozen civic-minded citizens who were willing to spend part of their morning cleaning up someone else’s mess at both the Center Street boat landing in Ironton and the South Point riverfront near the village hall.

Noah Jones, a boy scout with Troop 103 in Deering, would have been home “playing my video games” on any other Saturday, but he and fellow boy scouts and cub scouts did their part to make the Ironton riverfront noticeably tidier.

Why did Jones agree to exchange some game time for a pair of gloves and a trash bag?

“To help the environment,” he said.

Moose Teen Club members were also among the volunteers.

“We just all got together and came as a club and did it,” club member Jessica Townsend explained.

Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District Director Dan Palmer said he was pleased with the turnout and pleased with the results. That agency is one of the sponsors of the event.

Thousands of volunteers each year participate in River Sweep. The cleanup extends the entire length of the river and encompasses six states.

Details on the amount of trash collected will be available from the solid waste district later this week.
