WORTHINGTON — Tony Brown just finished the best round of the Ohio Mid-Amateur Tournament and all he could think about was “what if?”

Brown, the former Ironton All-Ohio golfer and Shawnee State All-American, fired a tournament-best 4-under par 67 on the second day of the Mid-Am and finished tied for third place with three other golfers..

But it was the first day that had Brown thinking that he might have won the tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday at the Worthington Hills Country Club.

Brown shot a dismal 7-over 78 on the first day before rebounding the second day and finishing with a 145 total.

“I had a good day. I hit the ball well. I thought if I had made another birdie or two, I had a chance to win the third,” said Brown. “I went from tied for 45th to tie for third and that isn’t too bad.”

Michael Kelley of Westerville won the tournament with a 142 scored and Jeffrey Scohy of Bellbrook was second at 144.

Brown had four birdies and no bogeys on the second day after hitting only five fairways and putting 32 times on the first day over the 6,800-yard, par 71 course.

“It was polar opposites. I couldn’t get anything going. There was a tall tree line and you have to hit the drive straight or the tee straight and I didn’t do that the first day,” said Brown.

“I started on the back nine the second day and I hit all nine greens. I could have gone really low. I had a couple of 8-footers and 10-footers that didn’t go.”

Brown is among the 38 golfers including Ironton golf coach Jeff Kerns who earned a spot in the Ohio Amateur July 14-18 at the Findlay Country Club.

In a qualifier on May 27 at Moundbuilder Country Club in Newark, Brown was one of 12 golfers who tied for the final spot and qualified in a playoff.
