SCOTTOWN — It came from a visit to Columbus to check out a fitness expo there that Corben Adkins of Scottown thought the same would work in his hometown.

So Adkins has come up with Flex Fest, a three-day event whose mission is to merge the power of the body with the mind for long-term benefits.

“We thought this area was prime ready for something like this to appear,” Adkins said. “Originally we thought we would have to bring in a lot from outside. When we put it together, we had so much raw talent.”

Throughout the weekend at the Veteran’s Memorial Field House will be vendors in such items as fitness supplies, diet supplements and workout equipment. There will also be contests from weight-lifting to arm wrestling.

“It’s for any age group anybody who would like to be fit … like to get motivation,” Adkins said. “It’s basically getting people off the couch, out from in front of the TV and exercise and see what this area has to offer.”

Adkins, who works at Special Metals as a crane operator, wants to inspire others into unlocking the joys of being physically fit. A one-time couch potato himself, Adkins got his inspiration from a similar expo six years ago.

“I was hooked,” he said.

The event is from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults and children under 10 are free.
